Challenge:
Myer Grace Bros is an Australian owned and operated nationwide department store with some 25,000 employees working in geographically diverse locations across abroad range of products and services. The demanding nature of the retail trade, the broad spectrum of individual experience, the difficulty in getting people "off the retail floor" and the sheer size of the workforce presented the Training and Development team with a real challenge. How do we deliver consistent, cost effective, results oriented learning opportunities with a clear ROI to our staff.
Solution:
The Myer Grace Bros team introduced a corporate wide learning and development strategy based on clearly defined Business Objectives Compass. Each compass point was supported by identified core competencies which we translated into individual learning plans supported by a carefully selected range of self paced learning programs. Each employee was encouraged to work with a mentor to develop and implement their own learning strategy. In return for free access to the courses employees committed to do the training in their own downtimes or at home. Each course included a Level II assessment. Fulfillment, tracking, assessment marking and reporting was outsourced to In Learning.
Results:
Since the programs inception over 60% of staff have voluntarily completed at least one self selected self paced course and an average up take of 1.62 courses per person all completed in their own time and on their own initiative. The entire program has been developed and delivered well within budget constraints. Unsolicited feedback from staff members has been extremely positive with numerous examples of improved results, enhanced skill sets, improved personal relationships, increased team work and demonstrated improvements in performance.
